I've never used a torque wrench or seen anyone else use one while sealing up a diff. Just snug them down tight enough and you won't have any problems. I've used both the gray, blue, and red RTV without any problems on numerous diffs also.

However, a lot of people (including me) are comfortable with applying blue loc-tite and calling it good. Another stover nut application is the pinion nut which holds the yoke on to the the pinion gear.

That's why it's stronger. The bolt holes in the carrier and ring gear are in exactly the same position on both the old and new axles.
